Peterson’s office last week emphasized that the mayor continues to support charter schools and does not plan to change the process for approving new ones. At the same time, Justin Ohlemiller, his spokesman, said the mayor thinks IPS is crucial to the city and must succeed, as well.

Charter schools are public schools that are allowed more freedom in areas such as hiring and curriculum but are held to the same access and accountability standards as traditional public schools. There are 36 statewide, 16 of them sponsored by Peterson in Indianapolis.
